GPs
Nelson Plaza Clinic is a GP owned and led multidisciplinary clinic. It is the only GP clinic in Nelson Bay (population of 11,820) and services the Port Stephens area (population 69,000). We are 30 minutes from Newcastle Airport and 45 minutes from Newcastle.
We pride ourselves on a high quality patient care with a focus on chronic disease management, preventative health and ATSI health.
We currently have 10 GPs including registrars and 10 consulting rooms. We have co-located pathology, physiotherapy, dietician, podiatry and exercise physiology with underground car parking. We have a large 3 bed treatment room with separate procedure bay. Our nurses provide support for ECG, spirometry, ABPM, health assessments, immunisations, antenatal shared care, wound care and cervical screening. We have a dedicated assessment room for patients with respiratory symptoms, separate from the main clinic and waiting room. We provide COVID-19 vaccination services in a dedicated vaccination space with nurse vaccinators and admin support.
Our practice managers have been with us since we opened in 2010. We also have a dedicated GP support officer to liaise directly with GPs and reduce the administrative burden on them.
We have a culture of fostering learning and continuing education. We host medical students and support GP registrars in their training.
We are open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. Our GPs are not required to cover our local hospital or nursing homes.

GP Registrars
Our practice is the ideal training practice. We support active lifelong learning and run scheduled group educational activities for trainees including weekly topic presentations, weekly case discussions/exam prep and journal club. Every new registrar has a full day face to face orientation with our Clinical Educator.
Our registrars work 4 days per week full-time or 2 days per week part-time. This gives an extra weekday for study, family or life-admin. Our clinic is currently open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. We are closed on weekends. Registrars are not required to cover hospitals or aged care facilities. We are classified as a rural practice (MMM4) and can accommodate trainees on the rural pathway. We supervise both RACGP and ACRRM trainees.
We have a dedicated GP support officer in our practice to help reduced the administrative burden on our GPs. We have onsite pathology and allied health including physio, exercise physiology, dietician and podiatry. We have a large treatment room with procedure area, spirometry, ECG, ABPM, immunisation and antenatal services. We have a dedicated respiratory assessment room to assess patients with respiratory symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are a COVID-19 vaccination provider and have a dedicated vaccination clinic space.
Our practice software is Best Practice, and we provide training for all our registrars if needed.
Registrars should be registered with GP Synergy, the regional training provider.
We recognise the challenges of the fellowship exams and provide specific exam focused sessions for registrars and flexibility around scheduled exams.
As a community-based GP practice we understand the reality of modern families. Many of our team have young children and we understand the reality of day-care, school pickup and family illness.
Nelson bay and the surrounding areas cannot be beaten for family life. There are excellent early learning, primary and secondary schools. The is every opportunity to enjoy different sports and activities and of course the 26 beaches.
Our managers have been a real asset to registrars and GPs moving from different areas. They can help with securing accommodation, finding childcare or simply getting to know the area.
Registrar Testimonials:
Registrar 1:
Nelson Plaza Clinic is where I spent my last term as GP registrar. This is an amazing rotation and I am very grateful to have worked with the team. All reception staff and GP support officers were exceptionally good. Carol and Melissa, the practice managers, were very helpful and thoughtful to the needs of the registrars. For example, they offered arrangement for accommodation and recommended local resources including dining, activities, etc. As part time registrar, I worked with Carol most of the time and she was very approachable, understanding and kind. This means a lot to me because I travel almost 3 hours each way to the clinic and they certainly made me feel very welcomed. Nursing and allied health staff were all very experienced and helpful. The clinic facility is great. I have everything I need in the clinic to perform minor procedures. These all made my training very efficient and easy. My supervisor Dr Alex Richardson is my best GP supervisor I have ever had. He guided me whenever I have questions and was always there for me when I needed support. He also designated teaching hour per day for exam preparation. He is very knowledgeable and very keen to teach, always available and reachable. I cannot speak more highly of my term experience with this clinic.
Registrar 2:
The team at Nelson Plaza Clinic made my transition into general practice better than I could have hoped. Everyone is kind, welcoming and supportive – and Dr Alex Richardson in particular provides a level of support and supervision that I have rarely come across in medicine. I highly recommend Nelson Plaza and am planning on returning to the clinic in the near future myself.
Registrar 3:
My name is Dr Ashleigh Lubotzky and I worked at Nelson Plaza as a Registrar for a year. I have been practicing medicine for 7 years and have worked in many hospitals and General Practices. Without a doubt this is by far one of the best practices I have had the pleasure of working with. The working environment allowed for a safe place to learn and grow as a doctor. Specifically, as general practice was very new to me at the time everything from the staff to the resources and never-ending support made it a pleasure coming into work each day. I have never worked with such motivated, competent and kind practice and office managers, lovely and dedicated nursing staff, diligent and supportive administration staff and a wonderful group of doctors. I truly felt heard, looked after and respected as one of the team members. This practice also has an incredible GP Support person whose specific role is to help GP’s manage their day/time and patients. I cannot recommend this practice enough for your GP training as well as working here after Fellowship.
Registrar 4:
I really enjoyed my term here! The staff were very welcoming and supportive. I had weekly teaching sessions to prepare for my exams and to answer any questions I had. Not only was Dr Richardson a great mentor but he also made sure my mental well-being was looked after.
Furthermore, the practice managers helped me secure accommodation which was a big help as I was new to town.
Registrar 5:
I started as a GPT1 at Nelson Plaza Clinic. From the outset, the interview process and orientation was a very easy and somewhat seamless process. I was eased into starting my community based placements. Alex has organised a great orientation package so that you have the best start to training. Alex, Joel and the other GPs are all very helpful and approachable. There wasn’t one instance where I felt I couldn’t text, call or knock on someone’s door to ask a question or get advice. The clinic is very well set up. The treatment room is well equiped, as well as the reception support team, which makes for seamless consults. The clinic is in a catchment area that takes in a wide variety of presentations. You’ll see paediatrics, through to antenatal/family care and aged care. Overall, I’ve had one of the best starts to training. All staff – clinical staff, allied health staff, reception and the practice management team have been very supportive and have ensured I’ve had the best time whilst at the clinic. I highly recommend working at Nelson Plaza Clinic
Registrar 6:
I worked for Nelson Plaza Clinic in 2023 for a year part-time prior to going on Maternity Leave. I had a brilliant placement here and I cannot fault it. I found that there was an excellent staff culture, with every staff member from doctors, nurses and admin being extremely helpful, warm and welcoming. There was a large staff room where we would sit down and talk at lunchtime and also have our regular teaching sessions as a group. The amount of education and teaching we were given far exceeded the requirements set by RACGP, with one-on-one teaching along with group teaching and exam preparation sessions every week. Nelson Plaza Clinic was very flexible and accommodating when it came to my upcoming maternity leave which I highly appreciated. Dr Alex Richardson was my GP supervisor, and he was brilliant. All the doctors here are very approachable and knowledgeable. I can promise you that if you work at Nelson Plaza Clinic, you will be supported, have timely supervision when required and will be able to work on any areas of interest that you have. I highly recommend this practice.
